Bob-lo Boat Ste. Claire Celebrates its 100th birthday this year!

Do you remember boarding the vintage steamer boats, St. Claire or Columbia, from the docks behind Cobo Center in Detroit?

The aroma of popcorn & warm roasted peanuts wafting over the side as you walked up the ramp to get on board?

Those were great times!

Years have passed and you may have forgotten about those childhood memories.

But this year, you and your friends will be able to rekindle days gone by and celebrate more simple times with a group of volunteers & investors headed up by Dr. Ron  Kattoo.

That’s right, the vintage steamer, Ste. Claire, is currently being restored in River Rouge, with hopes of celebrating her 100th birthday in downtown Detroit.  An August party is planned.

Lake St. Clair Living On Line Magazine is documenting the current restoration process as it unfolds.

Follow along with us as we revisit the history of the Bob-lo Island and the workers that became a part of our family photo album.

From the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. Joe Short was Captain Bob-Lo, a diminutive clown who entertained the children on Bob-Lo cruises. He had been hired by the Browning's away from the Ringling Brothers Circus and worked the boats until 1974, when he retired at age 90. He died the following year.
